FAQ.
Q: What is SHIFT?
SHIFT (Strategic Help for Inclusive Funding & Training) supports students and professionals in the arts and humanities in applying for scholarships, grants, fellowships, residencies, and academic programs.
Q: Who is SHIFT for?
We support students, emerging artists, art historians, curators, and cultural workers from all backgrounds in the U.S. and internationally.
Q: What kind of support does SHIFT offer?
We offer one-on-one mentorship, application editing, workshops, and access to a curated resource hub with funding and training opportunities.
Q: Can you help with a specific application I’m working on?
Yes! Our team offers personalized feedback on specific applications, including essays, personal statements, CVs, and project proposals.
Q: Do you only support art-related opportunities?
While our primary focus is on the arts and humanities, many of our resources are helpful across disciplines. Reach out if you’re unsure—we may still be able to help.
Q: How can I request mentorship or application support?
You can fill out our contact form or check the “Contact” section for application intake instructions and availability.
Q: I’m a mentor/editor—can I volunteer?
Yes! We’re always looking for experienced mentors, artists, and reviewers. Visit our “Contact” page to learn more.
Q: Are all the opportunities on your site free to apply for?
Most are, but not all. We clearly label opportunities that require application fees and prioritize free or low-cost programs.
Q: How often is your resource hub updated?
We update it monthly with new funding basics, writing tools, and templates to support application materials for academic and funding opportunities.
Q: Can I submit an opportunity to be featured?
Absolutely! If you run or know of a grant, fellowship, or residency, please email us or use the submission form on our “Contact” page.
Q: Do I have to pay to use SHIFT’s services?
SHIFT is committed to access. Services are offered on a sliding scale, with some pro bono support for students and emerging creatives and paid consultations for individuals and institutions seeking more extensive support.
